Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964. She is an American politician. Harris is the first female vice president and highest-ranking female official of U.S. History, as well the first African American and second Asian American vice president. Harris is a member of the Democratic Party and was previously the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017. Additionally she was an United States senator representing California between 2017-2021. Harris was born in Oakland, California. She graduated from Howard University as well as the University of California Hastings College of the Law. Her professional career started with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Harris was later recruited to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. She was elected San Francisco district attorney in 2003. In 2010 she was appointed Attorney General of California and re-elected in 2014. Harris was the junior United States Senator from California between 2017 and 2021. Harris beat Loretta Sanchez in the 2016 Senate election to become the second African American woman and the first South Asian American to serve in the United States Senate. As senator, she was a vocal advocate for reforms to healthcare, federal de-scheduling of cannabis, a pathway to citizenship for immigrants who are not legal, the DREAM Act, a ban on assault weapons, as well as progressive tax reform. She earned national attention for her provocative questioning of Trump administration officials during Senate hearings, including Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and was accused of sexual assault.
